Impact of habitat loss and fragmentation on viability and genetic structure of animal populations. An individual-based model is used to simulate the functioning of animal populations on both real and simulated landscapes to assess how habitat fragmentation impacts the genetic structure of populations and their probability of extinction. Funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology.
Dr. Jeff Beeler/Psychology Dr. Nathaniel Daw/NYU Modeling mouse adaptive behavior using temporal difference algorithms. Fitting data from semi-naturalistic foraging studies with mice to temporal difference models to understand how reinforcement learning mechanisms mediate allocation of energy and decision-making that underlie adaptive behavioral strategies to different environmental conditions.

The current study would have a major breakthrough in brain imaging study theoretically and methodologically and would have important implications for clinical diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Christopher Hanusa/Mathematics Miriam Striks  Study of discrete mathematical objects such as permutations, symmetry group elements, lattice point configurations, and core partitions. Computer generation of the set of objects under question gives exact data about the structure of these objects. Data analysis informs conjectures and proof techniques leading to new theorems.

Eric Roginek Large-scale spatially explicit analysis of learned bird song. Songbird vocalizations are socially learned and thus can diverge across time and space like any other cultural trait. The object of this study is to quantify the variation in an extensive dataset of complex songs of the house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus), with a particular eye to understanding how these songs vary across space.
